The Adopt a Family program selects individuals and families from community programs and the Durham Social Services needs list. This program provides those selected with year-round support! With special emphasis on providing services during the back-to-school shopping season, Thanksgiving and Christmas we hope to alleviate undue stress surrounding these time periods. Under special circumstances, the Adopt a Family program may pay a utility bill or assist with enrollment fees for summer programs for children.
Twice a year a small number of families are invited to attend a life skills workshop that includes advice on budgeting, parenting, and personal hygiene. Upon completion of the workshop, participants receive clothing and one month worth of groceries. The goal of the program is to help the families become self sufficient and eventually bring them back into the organization as volunteers or paid staff.
Volunteers are heavily relied on to:
- Organize program activities
- Recruit and train other volunteers
- Fundraising/Collect food and clothing
- Mentor/Provide counseling and support services to families
- Plan workshops/Food drives
- Deliver Meals/Clothing
